Bernard, also cited as 'Bernardo de Ripon', is referenced in many early records, as 'Clerk of Ripley', and by his son Robert as 'Prince de Rippelay'; and this same son Robert is later referred to as 'Fountains Abbey Robert'.
The title 'Prince' implies head of Ripley Castle, rather than a church position, although 'Clerk' also implies the church. All of this family are closely connected with Fountains Abbey.
